The Good: Wix.com’s intuitive drag-and-drop editor allows you to quickly create either an HTML5 or Flash  based website. Users can select from hundreds of pre-built design templates, which can be turned into blog sites, standard web sites, mobile sites, Facebook pages, e-commerce websites, or even simple widgets that can be placed on an existing site. All templates available for use are optimized for search engines, and the major search engines such as Yahoo, Google, and Bing, will be able to access and index your site on the very first day with no additional tweaking required on your part. Standard free sites have the Wix.com logo and watermark permanently affixed to the site, but this can be removed by simply upgrading. Wix offers different pricing plans to cater to consumers of all levels, from a free basic plan that’s suited for individual bloggers and small companies, to premium monthly plans that come with their own domains, unlimited bandwidth, and support for features like e-commerce shopping carts, should your business require it.

The Not So Good: Customer service is currently somewhat slow, but rapidly improving as they grow in popularity. It appears that paid users currently get priority with customer service. The free sites are lacking in functionality like shopping carts and Google Analytics, and you have to upgrade if you want access to it. Additionally, there doesn’t seem to be a way to import data from another source, and to export data to another source. If you have existing data from another website, you must manually bring it over and if you decide to move to a different hosting service, you’ll have to move your data manually. Finally, I noted that certain themes had cross-compatibility issues between browsers, for example, some page elements that show up correctly in Internet Explorer do not show up properly in Google Chrome, and in some instances the settings menu isn’t accessible from Firefox, but it works just fine in Safari. This sort of thing is normal for web developers, however, and the problems are being fixed just as quickly as they are being discovered.

The Verdict: Wix.com offers a great website builder with great features. Although limited, their tools are easy to use and the free sites are a great way to get started especially for smaller outfits like individual bloggers or small companies. However, if you need your own domain, or additional features like shopping carts or Google Analytics integration, then you’ll need to upgrade to one of their paid tiers. There are numerous options available, and each one is priced reasonably for what it gives you, so you’re sure to find one that meets your needs.

I appreciate the review. I almost paid a web designer $3,000 to build my website but came across your review on Wix. This is great! I saved myself tons of money by using their service.

I created a website at Wix.com for my freelance business and was very pleased with what I got. For the most part I was able to do what I needed to get what I wanted. Can’t complain much, especially for the cost savings and the quick delivery.
